Away stars Oscar-winner Hilary Swank as an astronaut, and, because of the star power, Swank’s space-themed drama was expected to do well. However, Netflix ended up canceling the show after one season. Showrunner Jessica Goldberg apparently expected the news, though the reason why is unclear.

The show was popular immediately, earning the “#1 on Netflix” badge when it dropped. The show was extremely expensive, costing the streaming giant $6 million an episode to produce. Shooting scenes also became nearly impossible, particularly after 2020. The logistics made Away an unsafe bet, something Netflix usually shies away from.
