The Law & Order franchise has been on television, in one form or another, for more than three decades. There have been more than half a dozen spinoffs that have stemmed from the original series, and, every year, there are new L&O ideas that continue to be pitched to NBC. Law & Order: For the Defense was supposed to be the franchise’s latest installment.

The series order was given in the spring of 2021, and was slated for a 2022 premiere. NBC and Dick Wolf, the franchise’s creator, however, opted instead to scrap the spinoff and bring back the OG series in hopes of recreating the magic of the past.
