On Groundhog Day in 2015, the Oprah Winfrey Network approved the commencement of production of a television series adaptation of Natalie Bastille’s novel, Queen Sugar – and Groundhog Day it was, because, over the next few years, the creative minds behind the show ended up doing what they loved to do day-in and day-out.

Before the premiere episode of the sixth season aired, the announcement was made that the Queen Sugar would be renewed for a seventh. The good news, however, was bittersweet, as it was also decided that the seventh season would be the show’s last.
