In 1953, the War of the Worlds film blew everyone’s minds. The film was adapted from the late-1800s novel by H.G. Wells, and it was the first of five film adaptations. The 1953 movie’s flying saucers were among its most-talked-about props. Directors wanted to avoid the usual, stereotypical flying saucer look.

The Martian war machines were designed as sinister-looking, manta-ray-shaped machines made from copper. One year later, these props were used in the movie Robinson Crusoe on Mars as yet another alien spacecraft. Both films were directed by Byron Haskin. The spaceships were later melted down and recycled after the films wrapped up.
