Items Needed: Small, flat-tipped screwdriver, new battery
Est. Price: $10-$15*

Admittedly, it does seem a little silly to call AAA or take a trip to the mechanic to replace your key fob battery. You can do this yourself, as the key fob is not as impenetrable as you may think. You need a small, flat-tipped screwdriver to get the fob’s battery compartment lid off.

After unscrewing the lid, replace the battery with a new one. New key fob batteries usually don’t cost more than $5. You will be able to tell if your fob’s battery is low if the LED light that usually illuminates after being pressed remains dark. You can also check the fob’s voltage using a voltmeter if you have one.
