Risk Factor: Waves from the ocean cause poor visibility, the road is complete unprotected from the sea

The Atlantic Ocean Road in Norway cost $13.8 million to complete, and it was awarded the “Norwegian Construction of the Century” accolade in 2009. Though it has been praised for its feats of engineering, including causeways, eight bridges, and viaducts, the Atlantic Road is perilous.

It’s all too easy to imagine a car getting swept out to sea on this highway. Atlantic Road travels through several unsheltered parts of the Norwegian Sea, and waves beat down on cars as they drive, causing poor visibility and hydroplaning. The 5.157-mile road is a spine-chilling drive that will have your knuckles white on the steering wheel as you hope the waves don’t take your car with them.
