The Dalton Highway was originally constructed to support the Trans-Alaska Pipeline in the 1970s. It is twinned with the pipeline, which carries oil from Prudhoe Bay to Valdez. This road is far north, and it’s often closed, either to wait out inclement weather or to repair parts of the road that have broken down (a common occurrence, that is close to the ocean). The Dalton Road is basically just a gravel road in some spots, dotted with huge potholes. There is also low visibility, as drivers have to bear with the extreme, tempestuous Arctic weather.
