Most Dangerous Roads Ever Built

23. Tianmen Mountain Road, China

Constructed: 2005
Risk Factor: The road has no shoulder and winds around and around the steep mountain

The Tianmen Mountain Road, also known as Tongtian Avenue, is a seven-mile road that has ninety-nine bends, winding around and around the mountain. There is little to no shoulder, so drivers taking the road too fast are at the mercy of Tianmen Mountain’s steep descent.

Tourists of Tianmen can take a cable car or walk, but some prefer to drive to the summit. The Tongtian Avenue takes drivers to the Tianmen cave, which is a natural, 431-foot arch in the mountain. Tongtian has a glass skywalk where visitors can look out over the Avenue. The skywalk, called Coiling Dragon Cliff, is named after the shape of the winding road.
