Most Dangerous Roads Ever Built

37. Tsugaru Iwaki Skyline, Japan

Constructed: 1958
Risk Factor: High ascension, hairpin turns

As one website said, the Tsugaru Iwaki Skyline can make someone “carsick” just by “looking at it.” The road is an extremely dangerous mountain pass, with gradients of 8.66%-10%. The road, which is located in Japan’s Tohoku region, has sixty-nine hairpin turns, which are made all the more harrowing when you have to take these turns at a high altitude.

The road ascends 2,644 feet with a steep gradient before it ends at Mount Iwaki’s eighth station. There is a chairlift to take people from the eighth to the ninth station, as it’s impossible to drive. The road is managed by Iwaki Skyline Co., which charges $16.37 for a regular-sized car to travel the pass.
