54. Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina/Virginia
Constructed: 1936
Risk Factor: Intense tunnels, terrifying curves
Occasionally, there will be headlines about another poor soul losing his or her life on the Blue Ridge Highway. The highway travels through Virginia and North Carolina, and there are plenty of hazards for unwary or accident-prone drivers.
There are icy curves in the winter, which The Charlotte Observer described as “razor-sharp.” The National Park Service offered another example of lurking dangers: the tunnels. Even the NPS called the tunnels “foreboding.” Tunnels make up some of the longest linear stretches of the Blue Ridge Highway. If your car isn’t in great shape or you’re claustrophobic, this drive isn’t for you.
