66. Col de L’iseran, France
Constructed: Unknown
Risk Factor: High cliffs, hairpin turns
The Col de L’iseran is the highest paved mountain pass in all of the Alps. It is located in Savoie, France, and it is part of the Route des Grandes Alpes (another list-maker). Col de L’iseran is part of the Graian Alps, and it reaches 9,068 feet into the sky.
The entire zone of the Graian Alps is prone to heavy, visibility-reducing mist. The French government has been known to close the road to traffic on some days in the summer, only allowing cyclists through. The road is asphalted, which means that it can get very slick when wet. The high cliffs and hairpin turns only add to the suspense.
