22. Armand Césari Stadium Disaster, France
Built: 1932
Collapsed: 1992
Est. Damages: Unknown
On May 5th, 1992, a French Cup semifinal soccer match between SC Bastia and Olympique de Marseille was scheduled to be played on Bastia’s home field, the Stade Armand-Cesari. In order to take advantage of hosting such an important match, Bastia’s board wanted to add 50% more seating, which local authorities approved.
Shortly before the match was scheduled to start, the added terrace that was intended to hold 10,000 spectators collapsed, killing 18 people and injuring more than 2,300. The stadium has since been refurbished, this time, while following proper safety protocols.
