Originally planned to be an underground section of the Mexico City Metro, the plan for Line 12 changed because of a lack of budget. The line was instead changed into part under/part overground line, and an overpass was built over the Mexico City streets.

On May 3, 2021, a combination of wear and tear and the structural damage that was caused during the 2017 Mexico City earthquake, caused the overpass to collapse into the busy street below. 26 lives were lost, 79 people were hospitalized and 22 others were reported missing, making this accident the deadliest one that the Mexico City Metro had seen in almost 5 decades.
