Most Expensive Structural Failures in History

39. Rana Plaza Collapse, Bangladesh

Built: 2006
Collapsed: 2013
Est. Damages: $10-$15 million*

The Rana Plaza collapse was a horrible tragedy. It is the deadliest non-deliberate building failure incident in contemporary human history, as well as the deadliest garment factory disaster ever. The Rana Plaza was an eight-story commercial building with a bank, shops, clothing factories, and apartments.

The owner of Rana Plaza, Sohel Rana, ignored complaints about the structure, including cracks in the foundation. Though the Plaza was temporarily closed in April of 2013, Rana ordered garment factory workers to come back to Rana Plaza, even though the building was unsafe. On April 24, the building collapsed, killing 1,134 people and injuring 2,500. In June of 2014, Rana was charged with murder, and his trial is still pending.
