A really good example of permanent customs that usually end badly for the homeowner is quirky tiling. Upgrading a home’s floors before a sale is nothing new, and tile and wood can increase value. But, if you have a really specific idea, such as black-and-white tile from a 1950s diner, you’re going to put off potential buyers. If you want customs, make them temporary. Buy a rug with that pattern instead of putting down new tile.
