University of Kentucky Basketball is not just the most popular sport of those in the commonwealth: it is their religion. Christian Laettner’s overtime jumper in 1992 that ended the UK Wildcats’ season was not just another lost games to the good people of Lexington. It was sacrilege. Kentucky does not have a professional baseball, football, or basketball team. All they have is their beloved Wildcats. There love of UK is so strong that if the women’s bowling team was competing somewhere in the Gaza Strip, at least 4000 fans from Lexington would attend. Even in 2022, it is not uncommon to see fans sporting t-shirts with “I hate Christian Laettner”.
