Sports Cities and the Athletes They Hate

Medellín, Colombia: Andrés Escobar

To call this one a tragedy would not be strong enough. During the 1994 World Cup, Escobar accidently scored an own goal that cost Colombia the win. Upon his return home, Escobar was murdered by a mob of three men in a parking lot. Murdered. To rephrase: three goons murdered Escobar because the team lost the match. This is sports at its ugliest. To make it ever uglier? Two attackers walked free and one served only 10 years for the crime.
