23. Ice Runway Airfield – Antarctica
Year of construction: 1960
Risk factors: Ice-covered landing strip
Without a doubt, the Ice Runway Airfield is one of the least conventional airports in the world. The take-off and landing strip is composed of compressed sea ice floor, making this a literal track of ice. Despite what you might think, pilots claim that the track is quite stable.
Still, limiting the weight of the planes landing on the runways of this airfield is a must-do. Frequently, the load on airplanes, combined with the weight of the passengers themselves, causes landing planes to sink into the ice, which is terrifying, even if it’s just a few centimeters of sinkage.
