Svalbard Longyear is the northernmost airport in the world. That is why the main danger it experiences involves extreme weather conditions. Thick layers of ice and snow are challenging for pilots, as they can make it difficult to locate the runway.
The surrounding mountains, of course, are also a problem when pilots must begin their descent. In 1996, a flight from Moscow crashed into the mountains before reaching Svalbard airport.
