La Aurora International Airport is surrounded by mountains and active volcanoes. In addition to these features, the weather conditions of the area have caused a variety of accidents. In at least two of them, the planes lost control due to humidity on the take-off runways.

This airport was also the site of the so-called “robbery of the century”, when three assailants entered the international area of the airport and stole eight million dollars without firing a single shot. After an investigation, it was discovered that the mastermind behind the robbery was a retired Army captain, Francisco Estuardo Arana.
