This airport is very important, since it is the only one in the entire Laccadive Archipelago. Because the airport serves all 36 tourist destinations in the area, it is too small. In fact, during the busiest hours, the terminal building can only hold 50 visitors, which is far too low a capacity.
An airport where so many passengers travel on large aircraft deserves a larger space, especially for security reasons. However, the expansion plans have been quite controversial. There is a sea turtle nesting site nearby, and building there would put them at risk, which is unacceptable.
