83. Charles de Gaulle Airport – France
Year of construction: 1974
Risk factors: Recent near miss at the airport
There was a recent surprising incident at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, France in July of 2020. An air traffic controller made a “slip of the tongue” that caused two planes to come within several hundred feet of crashing into each other. One plane was a United Airlines Boeing 787, while the other was an EasyJet Airbus A320.
Equipment malfunctioning, combined with human error, caused this to happen. This incident spooked the airline community, which questioned the safety of the layout of Charles de Gaulle Airport, particularly in light of the broken equipment that helped cause the near-collision.
