Risk factors: U.S. downgrade of aviation safety rating in Mexico

In May of 2021, the U.S. cut Mexico’s airline safety rating, which spelled bad news for Mexican airlines. The aviation safety rating’s downgrade came after findings that Mexico didn’t meet aviation standards set by a group from the United Nations. As a result, Mexico won’t be able to expand flights to the States.

U.S. airlines are no longer able to sell tickets for airlines operated by Mexico. Airlines like Delta have had to reschedule flights booked with Aeromexico. Aeromexico, for its part, says that it plans to work with regulators to get the safety standard back up to par.
